Hyper Light Drifter is a 2D action role-playing game fashioned after The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, rendered in a pixelated style comparable to Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP. The player controls the Drifter, a character that has access to technology that has long been forgotten by the inhabitants of the game’s world and is suffering from an unspecified illness.The story concept was inspired by lead developer Alex Preston’s heart disease, and has been likened by others to Studio Ghibli’s Castle in the Sky, while Preston cites the studio’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind as inspiration for the game’s world.

Lore of Hyper light Drifter:
The giant diamond shaped thing is this cell. It would bring immortality to the world, by uniting the souls of its inhabitants. This effect can be seen in the intro, as the bird-shaped thing in the air. But not everyone welcomed this invention. Either through combat or sabotage, the cell caused an explosion, which ravaged the earth and created a rift, summoning the titans into the world.
The Drifter fought the titans, and defeated them. But the power cell did not get destroyed. It still sits in the heart of the world, corrupting it and its denizens from within; the shadow monsters, the tendrils attacking him. He is lead underground to destroy the power cell, but the corruption is too strong, and he cannot reach it.
The Drifter died in his quest. But as the game starts, he is resurrected. Gravely injured, and gravely tainted by the corruption of the world, as made manifest by the demon that attacks him. But he can still complete his mission. He must explore the world, activating the power modules and releasing the seals that keep the core cell safe, so that he can stop the corruption once and for all.
Around the world, you can see what the corruption has caused. The violent and aggressive frog people, ruled by a giant toad that eats people. The bird people formed a cult, that gains power from sacrificing its own people. The forest, most obviously, got infested with parasitic crystal. The Drifter cleanses these as much as he can, but with the power cell alive, his efforts will never be permanent.
The few people that survived the apocalypse all tell stories of how they were chased out of their homes, attacked by corrupted creatures, or even how they fought alongside the Drifters to destroy the titans.
Who resurrected him? Judging by the godly halo and the representation of the jackal, it must be Anubis, or a similar god of the underworld. The power cell is housed in his realm, and he needs a Drifter to destroy it for him, so he resurrects one and guides him – as well as the other Drifter, who turned out not strong enough – through the world to this objective.
Why now? As you can see in the secret laboratory to the south, there are parts of one titan housed in tanks, and even a ‘smaller’ shadow beast that almost breaks out. Though there are no scientists left, there are very advanced robots still defending the complex; and, logically, they would still be continuing their research. The power cell may be influencing them to resurrect the titan that it summoned upon its corruption. What is Anubis’s role in this? It’s hard to say, but he looks to be the center of the world: he sits at the middle of the rune, and his elevator in the intro cutscene leads down to the power cell. I believe the power cell used Anubis’s powers to function, and when it exploded, his powers caused the titans to emerge. He needs the power cell destroyed to keep his power away from the people of this world, who clearly don’t know how to wield it.
TL;DR:
The Drifter is a member of an artificial species whose origin began long ago. You’re a drifter by occupation. Other drifters are not necessarily the same race. You travel the world in search of new and interesting tech from the long forgotten civilisations of the olden times. You’re a nomad. A loner. The crystal or Immortal Cell you have to destroy is essentially a malevolent entity, called Judgement that has access to and has stolen the power of a God/Godlike entity. It’s creation caused the armageddon that has left the world in a post-apocalyptic state. The God/Godlike entity is Anubis, the Jackal with a halo. He wants you to kill Judgement so it can’t resurrect the Titans, destroy the world and steal his power. You’re sick because you’ve been infected by the evil entity using the God’s power. Your only hope is to reach Judgement and hope for a cure. Spoiler. There is no cure. In the end you destroy Judgement and restore balance to the world as per Anubis’ wishes. *Shirts: We recommend that you wash your Fangamer apparel inside-out, with like colors, in cold water. Tumble dry low heat, no bleach, no ironing. If worn frequently, we also recommended washing on a gentle cycle.
*Jackets & Hoodies: Wash and dry the same as shirts (inside-out, like colors, cold water, low heat), zipped up, along with other garments to reduce zipper pull damage. If your jacket has a custom zipper pull, consider taking it off before putting it in the wash.
*Mugs: Our custom-made mugs are heavy duty, but if you want them to last a long time you may consider washing them by hand and avoid microwaving.
*Patches: Our patches and velcro come with a temporary adhesive, but we recommend sewing the patch on once you're happy with its placement.
